Discover the pool nature meant you to have

A natural pool is a swimming pool that cleans itself. Instead of chlorine, salt cells and a chemical schedule, it uses a planted regeneration zone and a bed of graded stone to keep the water clear. You swim in living water rather than treated water, and it looks like it belongs where it sits.

Bali is an unusually good place to build one, and an unusually important one.

Why Bali’s climate works in your favour

Natural pools depend on biology, and biology needs warmth. In temperate countries a regeneration zone shuts down over winter and takes two or three seasons to fully establish. In Bali it never stops. Water temperatures stay swimmable year round, the planted zone establishes in a single season, and the filtration keeps working through both the wet and the dry.

The wet season changes the balance rather than breaking it. Heavy rain dilutes and flushes the system; the dry season concentrates it. A pool designed for Bali accounts for both from the start — the sizing of the regeneration zone, the overflow, and the planting are all decisions about how the pool behaves in February versus August.

Why it matters for Bali’s water

Bali’s groundwater is under real pressure. Tourism draws a disproportionate share of the island’s fresh water, and the aquifers that supply the south are being drawn down faster than they refill.

A conventional pool makes this worse twice over: it is filled with treated water, and it is periodically drained and refilled, sending chlorinated water into drains and waterways. A natural pool holds its water. There is no chemical discharge, far less backwashing, and wherever the site allows we include aquifer recharge pits so that rain landing on your property goes back into the ground rather than off it. Whether that’s practical comes down to your soil and water table, and we’ll tell you straight after we’ve walked the site.

If you are building on this island, the water question is not an abstraction. It is the single most consequential environmental decision your property will make.

What about mosquitoes?

This is the first question almost everyone in Bali asks, and it’s a fair one.

Mosquitoes breed in still, stagnant water. A natural pool is neither — the water circulates continuously between the swimming and regeneration zones. Beyond that, an established pool develops its own predators: dragonflies, damselflies and frogs colonise the planted margins, and they eat larvae. In practice a well-designed natural pool is less hospitable to mosquitoes than the saucer under a potted plant.

The planting

Bali’s flora does most of the work for you. Reeds, lotus, water lilies and native marginal species grow readily here and give the regeneration zone the root surface area it needs. The result reads as landscape rather than equipment — a planted edge that looks like it was always there, with the filtration hidden in plain sight.

Who chemical-free natural pools suit

Private villas, boutique resorts and eco-lodges — anywhere the pool is part of the view rather than a blue rectangle beside it. They suit new builds best, because the regeneration zone wants planning from the outset, but existing chlorine pools can often be converted.

The honest constraint is space: a natural pool needs roughly 30–50% more area than the swimming surface alone. On a tight site that is the deciding factor, and it’s the first thing we’ll tell you.
